A few minutes later, Ginko finally becomes gradually aware of the small weight at the end of his bed.

He pushes himself upright, rubbing the heel of his hand over his eye as he squints through the darkness. Being nocturnal means that low lighting doesn't give him too much trouble, of course, but... it also means he's not really meant to be trying to look at things at this time of day anyway.

"...Stev'n?"

"...Oh," Steven says after a moment, his ears raising as he looks up, ashamed. "I'm...I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up..."

He really hadn't! He would have been cool with just chilling for a while. Why does Ginko have to sleep so light?

"No, 's fine." He shakes his head hurriedly. "What... are you doing here? S'not like I mind or anything, just wondering."

[tigermillionaire]

"I just..." Okay, so he doesn't really have a very good story. "Just kind of wanted to get out of the house for a while! And I couldn't really think of anywhere else to go..."

Not that he didn't spend hours every day just laying in the sun with the trees or anything. Finding places to go shouldn't be a problem.

Ginko listens thoughtfully, then gives a slight nod without pushing any further. "Alright. Well, you're free to stay here as long as you need to."

"Thanks Ginko," he says, smiling thankfully, though a few moments later his ears sink in worry. "...You can go back to sleep if you want. I don't...I don't really need to talk or anything right now."

"Okay." He hesitates for a moment, then leans over to very lightly ruffle Steven's hair before lying back down. He doesn't really go back to sleep right away, instead watching Steven uncertainly.

Steven's smile warms at that touch, and he inwardly notes how momentous that was for all it was small and awkward. His tail thumps happily against the side of the bed.

But when he sees that Ginko is still watching him, he freezes up a little. Wait...he can't just keep staring at Ginko if Ginko is still staring at him. That would be weird or uncomfortable or something! Should he just...look away?

He looks away from Ginko for a moment, and then glances back. And then looks away again, and then glances back again, and then panics and turns his head so they are no longer facing, laying his head down and closing his eyes for a moment. Oh geez.

Ginko gives a quiet, amused snort, glancing toward the ceiling instead. "Sorry."

Steven smiles at a little at the sound of that snort, but doesn't look back again. Instead he does his best to try to stay serious and let Ginko sleep instead of keeping him up with weird glancing contests.

His tail sways slowly over the side of the bed, and his ears fold down. He lets himself start to doze, hoping that Ginko can still do the same.

It takes a few minutes, but eventually Ginko does manage to drift off again, his breathing slowing down. Even when he's asleep, though, his tail doesn't seem to hold still, swishing and flicking back and forth in his sleep.

Steven isn't as tired as Ginko, so his napping happens sporadically. He notices Ginko's tail and has to hold back a delighted giggle - his tail does something similar when he's resting, and he thinks it's cute and funny. Some parts of being a monster is really cool in his opinion, even now.

He tosses and turns a bit while resting, so a bit later on he ends up curled against the back of Ginko's legs. His body is a strange kind of luke warm, but thankfully none of the prickles come into place. It doesn't take long for a few stray flowers to start growing over the curve of Ginko's legs.

Ginko mostly manages to sleep through Steven's moving around, but a few minutes after Steven ends up against his legs, he shifts some and twists around to check on the boy again.

He raises his eyebrows slightly at the flowers, but doesn't say anything and risk waking Steven up, instead just making an effort to go back to sleep.

A few minutes later, the fluffy tip of his tail manages to brush over Steven's face.

Steven wrinkles his nose in his sleep and then, after a moment, makes a chirping sound followed by a tiny sneeze. Which wakes him up enough that his eyes crack open and he goes "huh?"

The sneeze wakes Ginko up as well, and the trolls stirs a little at the sound. He gives a quiet, uncertain rumble, turning toward Steven again. "What...?"

Steven wakes up just enough to realize what happened, laughing and grabbing the fluffy part of Ginko's tail with his arms. He hugs it to his chest like a teddy bear.

"Your tail is tricksy," he says, nuzzling his face against the soft fur.

He blinks, the tip of his tail giving another twitch. "...Oh. Sorry."

"It's okay," Steven says, still grinning into the fluff. "We made up, now."

Ginko gives a quiet snort, and the tip of his tail flicks against Steven's nose again, which just may have been intentional this time. "Good to hear."

Steven giggles, wrinkling his nose against the fluff. As amazing as being a nymph is, sometimes Steven wishes he could be this fluffy. Having fur seems kind of nice.

He stays snuggled up with the tail, curling up at Ginko's side more officially. He feels way better about stuff right now, and he's really glad that Ginko is his friend. He makes a soft, nymphish churring sound.
